They are classified by section divisions, and in turn classified by product type and brand name. Department stores originated in downtown areas of major cities in the 19th century. With the introduction of different kinds of transportation, they were located in regional malls. Their main objective was targeting consumers with average household incomes.
There are commonly two types of Department Stores; the full-line department store and the specialized department store. The full-line department store carries both hard goods (such as furniture, housewares, and home electronics), and soft goods such as (apparel, accessories, and bedding). Examples of a full-line store are Macy's and Marshal Field's which carry both hard goods and soft goods. Except for Sears, most full-lined department stores no longer offer major appliances. Specialized Department Stores or limited-line department stores restrict their inventories instead of carrying full lines. Examples of these Department Stores are Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom which focus on apparel and wearable accessories and may not carry lines such as furniture and home electronics.
